How Pet Insurance Works

Step 2: Pay Your Vet Bill

At the time of your visit, you pay us directly for services rendered.
Make a Payment >

Step 3: Submit a Claim

You send your invoice and medical records to your insurance provider.

Step 4: Get Reimbursed

Get Reimbursed: If the treatment is covered, your provider reimburses you based on  your plan’s deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual limit.

*** Some providers offer direct pay to veterinary clinics, but most operate on a reimbursement  model.

What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

Coverage varies by provider and plan, but most policies fall into one of three categories:

What it Covers:  Injuries from accidents (e.g., broken bones, swallowed objects)

Plan Type: Accident & Illness

What it Covers: Accidents plus illnesses like infections, cancer, allergies, and more

Plan Type: Wellness Add-Ons

What it Covers: Routine care such as vaccines, dental cleanings, flea/tick prevention

*** Note: Most plans do not cover pre-existing conditions, elective procedures, or cosmetic  treatments.

Things to Know when looking for insurance

Age

Age

Insuring your pet at a younger age allows you to secure coverage before  any pre-existing conditions develop, ensuring comprehensive protection  throughout their life. As pets age, they are more prone to health issues, and  getting insurance early helps you avoid potential exclusions or higher premiums  associated with age-related conditions.

Breed

Breed

Some breeds are naturally predisposed (more likely) to develop certain medical conditions. It is important to know and consider the risks associated with your breed before you choose the level of coverage you require;

Gender

Gender

Gender itself is not a significant factor in determining insurance coverage or premiums. However, there may be some insurance providers that offer optional coverage for specific gender-related procedures such as spaying or neutering.

Coverage

Coverage

Coverage is essential to ensure that your pet's medical needs are adequately protected. Coverage refers to the range of medical expenses and treatments that the insurance policy will reimburse.

Deductible

Deductibles

Deductible is important because it determines the amount you'll need to pay out of pocket before the insurance coverage kicks in. A lower deductible means you'll have less upfront expense when filing a claim, but it may result in higher monthly premiums. On the other hand, a higher deductible can lead to lower monthly premiums but requires you to pay more before the insurance starts covering expenses. Considering the deductible helps you find a balance that suits your budget and risk tolerance.

Waiting Period

Waiting Period

Waiting Period refers to the amount of time you need to wait after purchasing the policy before certain coverage becomes effective. Insurance providers typically impose waiting periods to prevent fraudulent claims and ensure that policies are not purchased solely for immediate treatment of pre-existing conditions.

Insurance FAQ

Pet Health Insurance - What is it?

Pet insurance is a type of insurance policy that helps protect your furry friend in  the event of unexpected illness or injury and helps manage vet costs.

Is Pet Health Insurance like Human Health Insurance?

Since pets are legally considered to be property, pet insurance falls under the  Property and Casualty insurance classification, like home and auto insurance.

Pet insurance is reimbursement-based meaning, pet owners will pay for the cost  of veterinary care and the claim is processed as reimbursement to the Owner.

No in-network or out-of-network! Clients can use their pet insurance policy at  any veterinary clinic that they like!

When to purchase Pet Insurance?

The best time to purchase pet insurance is when pets are young, before illness  and injury occur. Pre-existing conditions are not covered by insurance, and you may be spending more if you purchase insurance later.

Pre-existing conditions- what are they?

Pre-existing conditions are illnesses and injuries that occur prior to the start of  your insurance policy or during the waiting period.

Does insurance cover preventative care?

Most pet insurance companies will offer additional wellness plans that cover for  preventative care and vaccines!

Recommendations?

There are many great pet insurance companies to choose from, we can’t pick just one! Clients are encouraged to do their research and select the insurance policy that would be most beneficial for their pet’s needs.
